Cape Ann Regional Portfolio Night
at The Hive : 11 Pleasant Street, Gloucester, MA
November 2, 2016 from 6:30 – 8:30
Rockport and Gloucester, as well as the Greater North Shore Community, constitutes one of the nation’s oldest, continuously operated artist community in the country. For that reason, both Rockport Public School, as well as local art organizations, such as The Hive at Cape Ann Art Haven, continue to advocate for the preservation of the Arts in education. By increasing awareness of Art as a critical part of the total school curriculum, students will be inspired to think outside the box, color outside the lines, and think the impossible, possible.
The refinement of these creative faculties should be a priority of 21st century education. As young artists, students can develop a type of thinking that can inspire novelty and originality. Training their minds to be mediums capable of transforming the static into the dynamic, our community will look to the ingenuity of these creative thinker to be the impetus for both innovation and change.
While our modern culture often associates innovation with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, or the ‘STEM’ subjects, the creative capacity nurtured by the Arts is gaining recognition in our community as a fundamental component of problem solving, even in the most technical of subjects. When Art and Design are added to the education equation, STEM is transformed into STEAM. Symbolically, this acronym represents the natural energy, which once drove the turbines that powered the machinery that created wealth for this country. Practically, this acronym represents the future of the collaboration between the Arts and the Sciences. It is this collaboration, which will inspire innovation and drive future enterprise.
The Hive at Cape Ann Art Haven, in collaboration with the Rockport Public Schools, will host the First Annual Cape Ann Regional Portfolio Night. The event will provide students from Cape Ann and other Essex County public and private schools the opportunity to meet and have their portfolio reviewed by Admissions Counselors from AICAD (Association for Independent Colleges of Art + Design) from around the country and to gain a better understanding of post-secondary opportunities in art and design. The event is scheduled for November 2, 2016, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at The Hive at Cape Ann Art Haven.
